Lavender and Buhman left Shortgnome Shore behind and walked through the plains roughly in south-eastern direction. The damp marshes of Shortgnome Shore had merged into an expanding steppe which was characteristic for the south of the Doedbygd province. This land was also populated mainly by gnomes, who watched the - in their eyes - tall strangers with suspicion initially, only to invite them a little later to their hearth most friendly.

Lavender dragged the completely flabbergasted barbarian to the place where the goblin hag squatted on an old tussock of sedge. This must have soaked her once colourfully patched skirts wet up to her hairy green butt, for sure. She smoked her pipe and produced thereby foul-smelling fumes that seemed to keep away the mosquitoes, at least. The goblin babbled incomprehensibly and laid cards in changing combinations at the floor. Whatever cards she dealt out, her displeasure seemed to grow even more.
